At Nigerian Breweries, we have been intentional in our efforts to encourage environmental sustainability in the last decade. While we have made giant strides through our Brew a Better World (BaBW) initiative, we are set to take on more environmental responsibility in the next decade.
We recognise that our successful operation in Nigeria is largely owing to the safety of its biosphere. However, we also understand the urgency that pushing for a healthier, more sustainable society requires. We are aware of the impact of industrialisation on the climate and health, hence our commitment to supporting the sustainable development goals; not only by reducing toxic waste in the environment but also through community sensitisation.
To this end, we recently launched the NB Recycles initiative in collaboration with Wecycle, a for-profit social enterprise promoting environmental sustainability and community health. Through this partnership, we encourage the development of a green economy where society thrives, but no longer at the expense of environmental safety.
We are contributing to the brewing of a better world by reducing plastic waste. Currently, waste disposal containers are located in all nine of our breweries across Nigeria, as well as the communities in which they are located. This is to encourage recycling amongst community members and also our employees because we believe that charity begins at home.
We have adopted a pragmatic and forward-thinking approach to encouraging recycling. This is manifested in our incentivisation of the waste material dropoff. Wecyclers, as a partner in the NB Recycles initiative, will participate through the collection, sorting and recycling of the wastes which include plastic bottles, aluminium cans, paper, cartons, nylon and glass.
Beyond our current efforts geared towards reducing plastic waste in our immediate society, we are also interested in the bigger picture which is to contribute to the achievement of a clean, safe world. This we have pledged to do by embracing eco-friendly energy sources to limit—and ultimately end—carbon emission in the production and delivery of our goods and services.
