NB plc Partners Lagos State On Annual Tree Planting

A symbiotic chord was struck on Sunday July 14th, 2013   when Nigerian Breweries partnered with the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) to host the 2013 Lagos Industrial Tree Planting Campaign. The event was held at the Lagos Brewery; on Sunday, the 14th of July 2013 was the climax of many months of planning and preparation between the Company and LASEPA.

Delivering a keynote address at the event themed “Green is Peace”  the Executive Governor of the State, his excellency, Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN  represented by the General Manager LASEPA, Engineer Adebola Shabi  said the tree planting exercise was designed with the sole aim of awakening the consciousness of Lagos and the larger Nigerian Public on the unique role trees and other plant play in making our environment conducive for human habitation, and to encourage everybody to plant and protect trees.

In a similar vein, the MD/CE of Nigerian Breweries in his address, Mr. Nico Vervelde said the company was delighted to partner with the state government on the industrial tree planting day as it effectively aligns with the company’s long term sustainability agenda, “Brewing a Better Future”.

Mr. Vervelde, who was represented at the event by Mr. Samson Aigbedo, the Head of Brewery Operations, Nigerian Breweries  explained that trees were vital for climate control, adding that under the sustainability agenda of the company, Nigerian Breweries has made a commitment to continuously improve the environmental impact of its operations, empower the people and communities where it operates as well as positively impact the society. He stressed that for Nigerian Breweries, sustainability means “Satisfying the needs of today without placing the needs of future generations in jeopardy”.

The event which was attended by state and local government officials, members of the Nigerian Environmental Society, pupils and students from selected schools in Lagos, staff of Nigerian Breweries Plc., and staff of LASEPA witnessed the planting of Trees and the unveiling of a plaque.
