NB plc Kicks Off 2013 Don’t Drink And Drive Campaign
Nigerian Breweries Plc in conjunction with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has flagged off its annual “Don’t Drink and Drive” Campaign (DDD).The maiden flag off took place at the Kwara Express Garage, Ilorin, Kwara State on Thursday, November 28, 2013.
Speaking at the event, which had in attendance, commercial drivers, FRSC officials, members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Ilorin branch and other transport stakeholders, the Corporate Affairs Adviser of Nigerian Breweries Plc said the company has been at the frontline of responsible drinking and will continue to educate all consumers on the need for all to abide by the Don’t Drink and Drive campaign.
Earlier, the Zonal Commanding Officer, RS8 comprising Kwara, Ekiti and Kogi States, Assistant Corps Marshall Kehinde Adeleye affirmed that the spate of road crashes due to drink driving will generally reduce in the state in the yuletide as a result of the DDD Campaign. He commended Nigerian Breweries on its role at ensuring safety on the highways.
In Lagos, the campaign train took the message against drink driving to Aso Rock Motor Park, Oshodi on Tuesday, December 3, 2013. The event witnessed a huge turnout by commercial drivers, FRSC officials, Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) Officials, representatives of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), representatives of the Nigerian Army and representatives from the International Centre for Alcohol Policy (ICAP). Others present included representatives of NURTW, representatives of Oshodi-Isolo local government and some Road Safety Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).
The Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability Manager of Nigerian Breweries Plc, Mrs. Emete Tonukari who spoke on behalf of the company said that “the DDD is designed to promote responsible drinking among drivers and create awareness about the dangers of drink driving”.
The Sector Commander of the FRSC, Lagos State, Mr. Chidi Nkwonta strongly advised drivers against using alcohol while using the road. He attributed majority of road crashes especially during the yuletide to cases of drink driving. Other speakers at the event included the ICAP representative, Dr. Lanre Onigbogi, the representative of the Nigerian Police Force, ASP Osemeke Otabor, NGOs and the VIO.
The event also witnessed a short drama presentation by a drama group on the dangers of drink driving, a symbolic pasting of the campaign flyers on vehicles and distribution of the flyers to drivers and other road users. The campaign is scheduled for Ado-Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti state on Thursday, December 5, 2013 and Lokoja, the capital of Kogi state on Thursday, December 12, 2013.
The Don’t Drink and Drive campaign is designed to promote responsible drinking among drivers and other road users and to create awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving. The campaign is in its sixth year.
