NB Plc Holds 2015 Edition Of Beyond The School

Nigerian Breweries Plc has taken its career guidance programme tagged ‘Beyond the School” a notch higher by organizing it for several schools at a time. The 2015 edition of the programme held on Thursday May 21, 2015 at the Terra Kulture, Victoria Island, Lagos with students and teachers from Oregun Senior Secondary School, Oregun; Vetland Senior Secondary School, Agege; Government Senior Secondary School, Ikoyi; Baptist Senior High School, Obanikoro and Eric Moore Senior High School, Surulere in attendance. The initiative is put together for students in the senior secondary school categories in public schools to expose them to career options and factors they need to consider before making a career choice. It also to help students to improve their reading habit and underpin the importance of reading in career goal achievement.

The Project Champion, Mrs. Clementine Vervelde who addressed the students advised them to discover their abilities, talents and areas of interest, and be ready to take advantage of their chosen career opportunities in future. She noted that the students must believe in themselves and stand up boldly to challenges they might encounter in their career pathway.

Speaking earlier, the Corporate Affairs Adviser of Nigerian Breweries Plc, Mr. Kufre Ekanem noted that the initiative has been introduced to complement other initiatives of the company targeted at the education sector. He counseled students to work hard at their academics inspite of the economic challenges confronting them and the nation at large. He called on students to take advantage of the career guidance information provided to them, which was in line with best practices, to achieve their fullest potential.

This year’s edition also witnessed some innovation. Mr Abiodun Adegbola, Regional Programme Coordinator, Junior Achievement Nigeria educated the students on financial discipline. He encouraged the students to develop and imbibe the culture of saving, especially in formal institutions so as to help with their dreams and pursuits in life. The event also saw representatives from the school present compete in a Monopoly game where Alabi Samod of Government Senior Secondary School, Ikoyi won the first prize and went home with an educational fund of Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N500, 000.00) and a cash prize of One Hundred Thousand Naira (N100, 000.00). Emmanuel Peter of Oregun Senior Secondary School, Oregun won the second prize and was presented with an educational fund of Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (N250, 000.00) and Fifty Thousand Naira (N50, 000.00) cash prize. There were five winners each in the third, fourth and fifth positions with each receiving Sixty Thousand Naira, Fifty Thousand Naira and Twenty Thousand Naira respectively. Winners in the third position got Ten Thousand Naira of their educational fund in cash. All students present got take home packs of Monopoly game. Stanbic IBTC are the educational fund managers for the initiative.

The Nigerian Breweries Beyond the School programme is a career guidance initiative designed to enlighten and expose secondary school students to career options and how best they can focus their learning to make it more relevant to desired future careers. It also seeks to develop a healthy reading culture among the students. It would be recalled that in the five years since it was launched, Nigerian Breweries has taken the initiative to five schools: Oregun Senior Secondary School, Oregun; Vetland Senior Secondary School, Agege; Government Senior Secondary School, Ikoyi; Baptist Senior High School, Obanikoro and Eric Moore Senior High School, Surulere.
