Star Lager Backs Historic Nigerian Winter Olympics Team

Nigeria’s history making Bobsled team and Skeleton athlete to the Winter Olympics got a boost to their dreams recently when foremost lager beer, Star signed on to be a major sponsor of the teams to the winter games which kicked off on the 9th of February in Pyeongchang, South Korea. In the nearly 100-year history of the Winter Olympics, Nigeria has never been represented in any sport.

Interestingly, Star and the pioneering women share a similar history. As the first locally brewed beer in Nigeria, Star paved the way for other indigenously brewed beer brands when it rolled of the Lagos brewery bottling lines in 1949.

Franco Maria Maggi, Marketing Director for Nigerian Breweries said that: “As the first lager brewed in Nigeria, we identify with that pioneering spirit of excellence that these four amazing Nigerians represent. The zeal to go on and shine in the face of uncertainty, in an uncharted terrain, deeply resonates with us and we are very delighted to be able to support these great athletes in making this dream of participating and winning in Pyeongchang come true.”

The Nigerian Bobsled team is comprised of three women – Seun Adigun, Akuoma Omeoga and Ngozi Onwumere, while the country’s Skeleton athlete, Simidele Adeagbo, would also be flying the country’s national flag at the winter games.
